The Australian Magpie

The magpie is an Australian icon, with its unique black and white glossy plumage and vocalisations that have been found to mimic various native species and human speech. In Australia, there are up to nine subspecies of magpies, the most well-known of which being the Cracticus Tibicen.

They are territorial birds especially during the breeding season, and if you feed them in your backyard, they will begin to recognise you as a friend and return for more free food!

Despite popular belief, only a tiny fraction of magpies become violent during the breeding season. They have a habit of swooping bicycles and pedestrians who approach their nests too close. As a result, various anti-bird swooping gadgets have been developed ever since.

Crows and Ravens

Ravens and crows are both members of the Corvidae family and are frequently misidentified with one another. The base feathers of ravens are grey, while it is white for crows, and both birds have strong, unique cries. They are intelligent, resourceful birds who have been known to steal car wipers.

These beautiful black native birds can be seen playing dodge the cars while feeding on roadkill in park areas, schools, backyards, and along highways. They dig through dumpsters in urban areas, producing a mess that attracts cockroaches and rats. They have the potential to cause property damage in places where they swarm especially during the breeding season.

Rock Pigeons

Plumper and larger than a Mourning Dove, Rock Pigeons are pudgy, small birds with short legs and small heads. Their tail is large and rounded, and their wings are broad but pointed. To get rid of birds such as pigeons is an understatement, as they are one of the peskiest birds for residential and commercial properties.

Their colour varies, but most of these feral pigeons are blue-grey with two black bands on the wings and a black tail tip. The neck feathers of most birds are iridescent.

Blackbirds

Hundreds of blackbirds were dispersed over south-eastern Australia, primarily in the 1860s.

Though most Blackbirds remain inactive in Australia, their range has increased and they are capable of long-distance migration, with some crossing Bass Strait on a regular basis, and a few reaching subantarctic islands.

Seagulls

These white birds have grey wings and a black-tipped tail that distinguishes them. You will notice that they generally build their nests near the ground. Plant debris and seaweed are used to make these nests. When they are near the ocean, seagulls are renowned for gathering in huge flocks and sticking close to the beach.

When these birds are out hunting for food, they will only travel up to 40 kilometres from their nest. These birds eat plankton, tiny water creatures, and fish, but they have also been spotted searching the rubbish for delicious morsels. Worms and other insects have also been reported to be eaten by them. With that stated, these birds are protected, and if a problem arises, local experts should be contacted immediately.

Australian Brush Turkeys

Brush turkeys are a protected bird species in Australia, as are other native mammals. Australian Brush turkeys are typically afraid of humans so they are not such a pest compared to other bird species.

They eat insects, grains, and fallen fruits. With their huge feet, they rake the leaf litter or split apart rotting logs to locate food.

These birds are occasionally seen eating on ripening fruits amid tree branches, but the majority of their food comes from the ground.
